"What is Street Dance?" - A discussion for dancers and non-dancers

September 5, 2009. London. The official launch of Universal Dance Theatre, with an event called "What is Street Dance?" a discussion for dancers and non-dancers.

Recent years has seen the rise of "Street Dance" as a UK phenomenon, from its diversity in bridging possible gaps between members of the young community to international recognition.

But what is it?
With Street Dance acts Flawless and Diversity both serving up heart felt and passionate performances at the 2009 Britain's Got Talent finals, and reaching over 20 million viewers, Street Dance has been firmly cemented on the map.

Is it an umbrella term used to classify a range of techniques, like the way multicultural is used to explain societies, or is it a stand-alone technique that has it's own vocabulary.

Universal Dance Theatre is delighted to welcome five reputable figures of dance to share their first hand knowledge and experience, to give their insight and help to open the lines of communication that could potentially answer this question.

Panel speakers include:
Kymberlee Jay: Founder and Director of Funk Physics, the UK's first online information centre and studio dedicated to Street Dance. She is a top class choreographer, performance coach and consultant. Her credits include Madonna, Nike and BBC Blast.

James Narh: Founder and Director of G-Force Productions, and Street Dance Weekend, the UK's largest and most successful Street Dance Competition. He has featured on London Today, Sky News, BBC Radio and Evening Standard.

Derek Povey: Co-founder and President of Streetdance International, the governing body of Street Dance/ Hip Hop in the UK.

Special guests:
Hudson Jean-Pierre and Dean Williams, the two dancers from the video of the 1990 hit 'The Power' by German band Snap. They will be sharing their experience as Street Dancers of the UK in the early 1990's and sharing their ideas on where we are today, 19 years on.
