Feijão Com Arroz Presents… The Corcovado
What would you get if you fused Rio Baile Funk dance with UK Funky? The answer is The CORCOVADO! Both groups of kids from the UK to RIO and back had the new skank down instantly!
Yassmin Foster and Nicola Dracoulis embarked on a dance adventure in July of 2009 inspired by the big trend of funk house 'skanking' that was blowing up on the young UK scene. With a passion for street culture, and in particular street based dance, they decided to collaborate on producing a documentary style music video, highlighting similarities and differences by way of youth cultural exchange.
They went to Rio to meet with, film and exchange dance styles with young Carioca's in the favelas of Vigário Geral, Cantagalo and Complexo do Alemão. The question was: what kind of dancing they do in their spare time with their friends or what is their favourite dance style? Their answer was Baile Funk (or Carioca Funk).
One particular dance group, Oss Novatoss from Vigário Geral were asked to contribute some movements to the skank routine Yassmin and Nicola were creating. The boys came with 3 fundamental Baile Funk style moves to bring back to London.
Returning to London, Yassmin and Nicola called upon 3 teenage girls from Hackney and asked them if they'd be up for participating in a dance video. Meeting a number of times, Yassmin taught the dance movements to the young Hackney crew and in collaboration with them refined a final routine. This culminated into final video shoot where 16 young people from the area turned up to learn and perform on the day.
Menace, a young upcoming producer from Limitlus Productions was brought in to create a track under the creative direction of Yassmin and Nicola who were looking for a funky house style track that infused an edge of an Afro-Brazilian vibe.
And the final product is the whole journey.
